Confessions of a Professional Conspiracy Theorist immediately signals provocation. The title suggests both a guilty disclosure—a “confession”—and an identification with one of the most maligned figures in modern discourse, the “conspiracy theorist.”

SYNOPSIS

Told as a confessional memoir, the novel follows a public relations professional who drifts from mainstream marketing into a covert operation dedicated to creating and promoting conspiracy theories as part of an organised Astroturf campaign.

Spanning from late-1990s Britain, right up to the present day,  the story traces how PR tactics, repetition, selective facts, fear-based messaging, and manufactured consensus are repurposed to sell narratives such as the Illuminati, 2012 End of the World, the Eye and the Pyramid, and a host of other recognisable conspiracy theories.

Along the way, the narrator encounters a cast of characters drawn from the world of psychology, sociology, mythology, and media theory – each contributing to the construction of modern myths –  and also a well-known British TV personality from the 1980s who has a spiritual conversion and goes on to become the world’s most famous conspiracy theorist.

At its core, the book asks two central questions: how do people come to believe things, and who benefits when they do?

Camden says, “Conspiracy theories are often treated as fringe ideas, but there is an overlap between those ideas and the everyday machinery of advertising, politics, and media. Once you recognise the shared techniques of persuasion, it becomes difficult to dismiss the belief in conspiracies as merely eccentric or marginal.”

Continuing, “At its heart, this is a book about belief, not only in conspiracy theories, but in the everyday lives of all of us; how it spreads, how it is shaped, and how easily it can be manipulated once narrative becomes more powerful than truth.”

The book functions as both entertainment and education. It entertains by spinning an oddly plausible tale about lizards and Illuminati, and it educates by showing how belief — any belief — can be manufactured if one understands the levers of psychology and culture.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Will Camden is an author and a thirty-year veteran of the public relations and strategic communications industry. Beginning his career in mid-1990s London, he worked on major media and cultural campaigns before founding Signalroom, a boutique consultancy specialising in reputation management and long-term behavioural change.

Alongside mainstream work, he gained rare insight into how belief and narrative are engineered. Confessions of a Professional Conspiracy Theorist draws directly on that experience.

He lives near London with his family.
