Summary of Contents

1. How Your Beliefs Come From Other People

An introduction to borrowed knowledge, social proof and the simple idea behind third-party persuasion: messages are often more convincing when they appear to come from someone independent.

2. Ancient Authority: Gods, Kings and Priests

How rulers used priests, gods, ritual and divine approval to make political authority appear natural, sacred and beyond question.

3. Aristocrats, Experts and the Birth of Prestige Endorsement

How royal favour, elite taste, patronage and professional credentials became powerful ways of lending status and credibility to products, people and ideas.

4. Read All About It: Newspapers, Testimonials and Public Opinion

How newspapers, testimonials, letters and apparently ordinary voices allowed commercial and political messages to appear as independent opinion.

5. The Invention of Public Relations

The rise of modern PR, staged events, manufactured news and campaigns designed to influence the public without looking like advertising.

6. According to the Experts

How doctors, scientists and researchers have been used to give authority to products, policies and claims, often through selective evidence and carefully chosen experts.

7. Celebrities, Brands, and the Friend You Don’t Know

Why familiar public figures can influence audiences far beyond their actual expertise, and how parasocial trust turns endorsement into something resembling personal advice.

8. Who’s Paying for the Report?

A look at think-tanks, charities, front groups and apparently independent organisations whose funding or connections may shape the messages they promote.

9. The Third-Party Goes Online

How blogs, lifestyle websites, influencers, online reviews and algorithms created new ways to borrow trust and make commercial messages feel personal, popular and independent.

10. How to Have the Correct Opinion

How news, commentators, television panels, opinion polls and repeated political language help shape not only what people think, but what they think about.

11. Conspiracy Culture and the Alternative Third-Party

Why rejecting mainstream media does not remove dependence on other people, but often transfers trust to alternative presenters, researchers, online communities and charismatic speakers.

12. How to See the Strings and Resist Being Pulled

A practical conclusion about recognising hidden persuasion, questioning trusted intermediaries and learning to depend more consciously on better sources.

How to Open Your Downloaded File

Thank you for your download! Your files have been compressed into a single “.zip” file to make downloading faster and easier. Here’s how to access them in a few simple steps.

Step 1: Locate Your Downloaded File

First, find the file you just downloaded. There are two easy ways to do this:

  • Check Your Notifications: Swipe down from the top of your screen to open your notification panel. You should see a “Download complete” notification.

  • Use the ‘Files’ App: Open your phone’s app drawer and tap on the Files or My Files app. Navigate to the Downloads folder.

You will see a file with a zipper icon, likely named something like YourFileName.zip.

Step 2: Tap the Zip File to View Contents

Tap on the .zip file. A new screen will open, showing you a preview of the files and folders inside.

(At this point, the files are still inside the compressed zip folder and need to be unpacked or “extracted”.)

Step 3: Extract Your Files

To use your files, you need to extract them.

  • Look for an “Extract” or “Unzip” button on the screen.

  • Tap it. You may be asked where you want to save the new folder. Your “Downloads” folder is a good choice.

This will create a new, regular folder containing all of your downloaded files.

Step 4: All Done! Access Your Files

That’s it! The new folder is now unzipped and ready.

Open the new folder to view, open, and save all of your files just like any other file on your phone.

You can now safely delete the original .zip file to save space if you wish.
